Introduction to

It is the combination of two medicines effective in controlling high blood pressure. This medicine reduces blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels and easily pumps blood through the heart to reach the whole body. This reduces the risk of heart attack or stroke. 

This is a combined pharmaceutical formulation containing Olmesartan medoxomil and Amlodipine. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker and Olmesartan medoxomil works to block Angiotensin receptors that block the action of angiotensin II resulting in relaxation and widen the blood vessels. These drugs together make blood pumping through the heart more efficient by relaxing the blood vessels and work successfully in effectively reducing high blood pressure.

At what time of the day should you take Olmat AM?

Your doctor may suggest to take your first dose before bedtime, considering that this medicine can make you feel dizzy. After the very first dose you can take Olmat AM at any time of the day. It is important to take this medicine at the same time every day.

Can Olmat AM cause weight gain?

No, Olmat AM does not cause weight gain. However, in very rare cases, chronic diarrhea with substantial weight loss may occur. If a patient develops diarrhea while taking Olmat AM and no other cause of diarrhea can be deduced, the doctor may suggest discontinuation of the medicine and recommend another medicine.

How long does it take for Olmat AM to work?

You may notice a decrease in your blood pressure effectively within 2 weeks of starting Olmat AM. However, it may take about 8 weeks to see the full benefits of this medicine. Talk to your doctor in case you have any concerns regarding Olmat AM, but do not stop taking it without consulting the doctor.

What are the serious side effects of Olmat AM?

The serious side effects of Olmat AM include skin rash or itchiness, painful joints, fast heart beat, shortness of breath or tightness in the chest. Serious side effects may also include aching, tender or weak muscles (not caused by exercise), and swelling of the hands, feet or ankles. Olmat AM may also cause symptoms that may indicate high potassium levels in the blood, such as nausea, diarrhea, muscle weakness and change in heart rhythm. If you experience any of these symptoms, call your doctor immediately.

Can I feel dizzy after taking Olmat AM?

Yes, the use of Olmat AM can make you feel dizzy. This may occur when you suddenly get up from a lying or sitting position. To lower the chance of feeling dizzy or passing out, rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down.

For how long do I need to take Olmat AM? Is it safe to take long term?

You may have to take Olmat AM life long. Olmat AM controls high blood pressure but does not cure it. Do not stop taking it even if your blood pressure is well controlled. Olmat AM is generally considered safe to be taken for a long term. In some cases, long-term use may adversely affect the kidneys and the kidneys may not function as they should. Therefore, your doctor may prescribe regular blood tests to check urea, creatinine and potassium levels to keep a track of how well your kidneys are working.

Can Olmat AM affect my fertility or sex life?

Some blood pressure medicines (including water pills like hydrochlorothiazide) may affect a man’s ability to gain or maintain an erection (erectile dysfunction). However, it is thought that other blood pressure medicines can actually improve erectile dysfunction. If you are worried or notice some changes, talk to your doctor. There is no firm evidence which suggests any effect on the fertility of either men or women with the use of Olmat AM.

What are the other lifestyle changes I should make while using Olmat AM?

Lifestyle changes play a major role in keeping you healthy if you are taking Olmat AM. Avoid taking excess salt in your diet and find ways to reduce or manage stress in your life. Practice yoga or meditation or take up a hobby. Ensure that you have a sound sleep every night as this also helps to reduce stress levels and helps to keep your blood pressure normal. Stop smoking and alcohol consumption as this helps in lowering your blood pressure and preventing heart problems. Exercise regularly and take a balanced diet that includes whole grains, fresh fruits, vegetables and fat-free products. Consult your doctor if you need any further guidance to get the maximum benefit of Olmat AM and to keep yourself healthy.
